Lake Prespa Protected Area spans three countries, offering diverse ecosystems, rich biodiversity, and unique cultural heritage. It is a prime destination for birdwatching, hiking, and exploring freshwater landscapes.
The Lake Prespa Protected Area is a transboundary biosphere reserve shared by North Macedonia, Greece, and Albania, encompassing Lake Prespa and its surrounding wetlands, mountains, and forests. The area covers approximately 260,000 hectares and features one of the oldest high-altitude lakes in Europe, sitting at an elevation of around 850 meters. The reserve is internationally recognized for its exceptional biodiversity, including rare and threatened species such as the Dalmatian pelican, the Prespa trout, and the Balkan lynx. The landscape is characterized by a mix of freshwater habitats, peat bogs, oak and beech forests, and alpine meadows. Historically, the region holds archaeological significance, with ancient settlements and Byzantine churches dotting the shores and hills. Outdoor enthusiasts can enjoy a range of activities including hiking on marked trails through forests and hillsides, birdwatching at various wetland sites, fishing under sustainable regulations, and kayaking on the clear waters of the lake. The protected area also supports traditional agriculture and fisheries, enabling visitors to experience the local culture and cuisine. Key landmarks include the island of Saint Achilleios with its Byzantine basilica ruins, the village of Vevčani known for its historic springs, and several observation points ideal for panoramic views. The remote nature of parts of the reserve offers peaceful solitude for nature lovers, while the cross-border collaboration between the three countries provides unique opportunities for international eco-tourism.
